FOD prevention vs HUMS

Two critical aspects of aviation and rotorcraft safety are Foreign Object Debris (FOD) prevention and Health and Usage Monitoring Systems (HUMS).

HUMS detects early signs of wear and tear by continuously monitoring, collecting and analyzing data from various sensors on turbine engines and drive train components. Sensors will pick up vibration levels from the components. Prognostic algorithms create and establishes a baseline of normal operation. If the HUMS detects wear by increased vibration levels, it will alert the operator. Read more here

This proactive approach allows maintenance crews to address issues before they escalate, preventing unexpected failures and enhancing overall aircraft safety. The data collected by HUMS also facilitates predictive maintenance, optimizing maintenance schedules and reducing downtime.
HUMS can accurately pinpoint abnormal wear down to the inner or out race of a bearing.

The only downside about HUMS is that it will alert you, when the component damage has already been done.

It is the responsibility of the operator, pilots and maintenance crew to make sure the turbine oil system is not contaminated during oil filling and maintenance actions. Read more about “Prevention is the best way to avoid FOD in turbine engine oil systems.”

FOD in the turbine engine oil system leads to premature wear and damage. FOD can lead to catastrophic failures and pose serious risks to both passengers and crew. It is very important to be vigilant when performing maintenance work on a turbine engine to ensure that no contaminants are introduced into the oil system.

Contamination of the oil system results in over-roll of hard metal particles that will create damage to bearings and gears. This will reduce the engine life significantly.

HUMS will alert you in time, but FOD prevention is the cheapest and easiest way to avoid costly and lengthy repairs.

Use TheCanKey turbine oil can opener to ensure not to introduce FOD to your oil system when servicing or filling oil. It is an easy, proper and effective way to prevent FOD. Using TheCanKey FOD free oil servicing tools will ultimately save costs and improve overall safety and performance of the turbine engine.

TheCanKey is the only FOD free oil can opener on the marked. It is tested and certified by Saybolt Laboratories not to leave any debris whatsoever in the oil can during the opening process.
