FOD stands for Foreign Object Debris or Foreign Object Damage. In aviation, FOD refers to any substance, debris, or article that is alien to a vehicle or system and could potentially cause damage. FOD prevention is a critical part of aviation safety — even microscopic metal particles in turbine engine oil can cause bearing damage and contribute to engine failure.
The most overlooked source of FOD contamination in turbine engines is the oil can opening process itself. When a screwdriver, multi-tool, or improvised sharp tool is used to open a turbine oil can, small metal fragments are generated and fall directly into the oil. These particles are often invisible to the naked eye, pass through standard oil filters undetected, and reach the bearing surfaces — where even microscopic contamination can cause significant long-term damage.
TheCanKey is the only turbine oil can opener specifically designed and certified for aviation use. Unlike screwdrivers or multi-tools, TheCanKey is made from a reinforced composite polymer that does not shed metal particles or debris during the opening process. It has been independently tested and certified by Saybolt Laboratories — on both new and used openers — confirming zero debris introduction into the oil. No other tool used to open turbine oil cans has been tested to this standard.
Turbine engine oil filters typically capture particles from 15 microns and above. However, the oil film that protects bearing surfaces is only 0.05 to 0.5 microns thick. This means particles far smaller than what the filter catches can still penetrate the oil film, dent the bearing surface, and initiate fatigue damage. The filter cannot close this gap — which is why preventing contamination at the point of oil handling is the only reliable solution.

It has been evaluated, approved, and catalogued for procurement by NATO member nations and allied air forces. TheCanKey is used by military divisions and defence operators in multiple countries. The Saybolt Laboratories certification covers both new and used openers.
TheCanKey has been tested to last 500 openings — a tested, documented figure from the same independent testing process that produced the Saybolt certification. For most maintenance teams, this represents years of use. The opener is designed so that wear is visible before it becomes a problem. When visible wear appears on the cutting edge or body, it should be replaced. At the product price, the cost of replacement is negligible against the cost of a contamination event.
