Pilot introduced FOD

As an operator or aircraft owner, you trust your pilot to take good care of your aircraft or helicopter. However, the pilot mostly does not have a technical background. As the responsible aircraft owner, you have to ensure that pilots are aware of the risk and consequence of handling turbine engine oil.

It seems like a simple thing to fill oil, but it is not.

The turbine engine is extremely sensitive to FOD (Foreign Object Debris) in the oil system. FOD in oil systems creates premature wear, roll-over damage to gears and bearing, false chip warnings, eventually real chip warnings and biased oil samples. In the worst case, engine failure.

Most oil filling by pilots are done in the field in a “hostile” and dirty environment. It is therefore crucial that proper FOD free oil filler tools are already stored in the aircraft and replenished before flight. Ready and easy to use.

How do you make certain pilots are properly trained and understand the importance of the oil filling process?

Here are some key points:

• Pay extra attention to the job. FOD in turbine oil usually goes unnoticed by the handler.
• Use protective gloves and glasses. Make sure not to spill the oil.
• Use only approved and proper turbine oil can openers.
• Use only approved and proper oil fillers.
• Make sure the oil filler tools are clean before use. No dust or debris are allowed.
• Make sure the turbine oil can is clean before opening. Use of DustCaps are recommended.
• Show the can opening process and installation of the FunnelCap.
• Make sure to use the correct oil type and brand. Mixing of turbine oils is not allowed.
• Show location and operation of oil filler points on engines and gearboxes.
