There is never a FOD can available when you need one

When doing maintenance tasks on an aircraft or helicopter you produce a lot of waste. Safety wire clippings, plastic strip clippings, discarded hardware, sealing bits and pieces and much more. It is up to you to decide if the waste becomes FOD or maybe even dangerous FOD. It all depends on where the waste goes.

Ideally all the waste should be put in the FOD Can right away. However it is not all the time practical. You may be working on ladder or stand. Or you simply don’t have a waste can near your work bench.

So your waste might end up on the floor, in your pockets, on top of the work bench or it stays in the aircraft or helicopter – “I will get it later.” Now as the waste becomes FOD and is no longer under control. Anything can happen to the FOD. It can become stuck under your shoe and fall off while working on top of a helicopter. Get stuck in a tire. Get sucked into a turbine engine or get stuck in flight or engine controls. Maybe even short electrical terminals.

It is time to become FOD aware and make sure your waste stays waste and does not become FOD.

An easy solution is to make your own FOD can for your work bench. It is easily done. You just need and empty turbine oil can and a couple of minutes. Watch the video here and on TheCanKey.com to see how it is done.

By having a TheCanKey FOD Can on your work bench you send a strong statement to your mangers, co-workers and others that you take the FOD risk seriously and make and extra effort to collect your FOD. The “I am FOD aware” message should be on every maintenance worker’s mind. TheCanKey FOD Can will keep reminding you of this important message from its place on your work bench.
